Who am I?
My name is Zariya Edmonds, and I’m a graduate of Queens College with a Bachelor of Music in Music Education. I’ve been playing the trumpet since the fourth grade, and that early spark of joy led me through a rich journey in music. From attending LaGuardia High School in the city to performing in various programs such as the All-City concert band, the Brooklyn Salute to Music Borough Wide band, the I.S.O. Carnegie Hill Orchestra, the Summer Arts Institute program at Frank Sinatra, and the wind ensembles at Queensborough Community College and the Aaron Copland School of Music.
My passion for music naturally evolved into a love for teaching. Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to work with a wide range of learners—from private students as young as 10 to adults in their 60s. During my student teaching placements, I taught both general and instrumental music to students in grades K–8. These varied experiences have deepened my understanding of how to adapt my approach to meet diverse needs and have reinforced my belief in music’s ability to connect with every learner, regardless of age or background.
Music education is essential in schools because it builds character. A child who receives a music education gains critical life skills such as group participation, multitasking, and improved cognitive function. It gives students a meaningful outlet for self-expression and teaches them to think creatively—skills they carry into every part of their lives. Music is an enriching and joyful experience that all students deserve access to.
At the heart of my teaching is a belief in connectedness. I’m guided by the idea that “good teachers possess a capacity for connectedness... so that students can learn to weave a world for themselves” (Palmer, The Heart of a Teacher). These are the meaningful contributions I hope to bring to the classroom. I look forward to joining a school community where I can help students grow in musicality, creativity, and confidence.
